Super-Earths, characterized by their larger size and higher habitability potential compared to our own planet, are offering valuable insights into the diverse array of rocky exoplanets orbiting distant stars. When we look up at the night sky, space feels endless. But one of the most important regions around our planet may be far more dangerous than anyone realized.

Astronomers have discovered a cloud of tiny, previously invisible pieces of space debris drifting through geostationary orbit — about 36,000 km (22,000 miles) above Earth. This is the special orbit where satellites match Earth’s rotation, allowing them to remain fixed above the same point on our planet. It’s home to many of our most valuable satellites, providing weather forecasts, TV broadcasts, internet connections, emergency communications, and much more.

The frightening part?
Many of these fragments are only about 5 cm (2 inches) across — far too small to be tracked reliably, yet large enough to completely destroy a satellite if they collide at orbital speeds. Scientists describe the region as a “potential minefield.”
Every collision creates even more debris, raising the risk of a chain reaction known as Kessler Syndrome — a scenario where cascading impacts could make some orbits increasingly difficult, or even impossible, to use for future missions.
