At first glance, this sounds like good news. Controlled re-entry is far safer than leaving dead satellites in orbit, where they could create dangerous space debris and increase the risk of collisions.

What happens when thousands—or eventually tens of thousands—of satellites burn up in our atmosphere every year?

Today, Starlink operates more than 10,000 active satellites, and SpaceX has long-term plans for a constellation of up to 42,000. Since each satellite lasts only about five years, future generations could see several satellites burning up every single day.

Researchers are becoming increasingly concerned about what all that vaporized aluminum and other materials might do to the upper atmosphere. Could it affect atmospheric chemistry? Ozone? Climate? The honest answer is… we don’t know yet.

It sounds like the plot of a science fiction movie—but this is a real event.

The object isn’t an active SpaceX mission. It’s the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched in 2015 after delivering NASA’s DSCOVR spacecraft. Once its mission was complete, the booster was left drifting through space, trapped in a complex orbit influenced by the gravity of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.

Now, after years of wandering through cislunar space, its journey is expected to end with a collision against the Moon.

The rocket stage is predicted to strike the lunar surface at nearly 9,000 kilometers per hour. Without an atmosphere to slow it down, it will slam directly into the Moon, excavating a brand-new crater estimated to be around 15 to 20 meters across and throwing lunar dust and rocks high above the surface.

Despite the dramatic headline, there’s no danger to Earth. The Moon’s orbit won’t change, and the impact isn’t powerful enough to cause any global effects.

You also won’t be able to watch it with your own eyes. The collision won’t be visible to the naked eye, but astronomers across the Americas will be monitoring the Moon for a possible dust plume created by the impact. In the days that follow, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to image the fresh crater, helping scientists study exactly how high-speed impacts reshape the lunar surface.

It’s a reminder that even after a mission ends, spacecraft can continue traveling through space for years—until gravity finally decides where their story ends.
