A star vanished behind Pluto in July of 2023.
And when its light came back through, it came back wrong, not gone, not distorted by cloud.
Thinner, measurably thinner than the last time astronomers had timed one of these rare events.

The number that came out of that measurement was 16%.
16% of Pluto’s atmosphere drained straight into the surface in less than 24 months.
A collapse first predicted quietly in 1996, dismissed by most as a problem for the next century, is arriving right now.
And here is the part almost no one is willing to say aloud.

There is no spacecraft near Pluto.
There is no return mission funded.
There is no realistic way to build one before this atmosphere finishes disappearing.
The last real look humans got at this world lasted a single afternoon.
back in July of 2015.
Everything since then has been guesswork.
Before I go further, take a second.

Wherever you are watching from, whatever time it is where you live, ask yourself honestly.
When was the last time you actually thought about Pluto? Most people, if they are being truthful, will answer with something from 10 years ago when the pictures first came home.
That is not an accident.
That is the story we were told.
And it is the story I want to take apart.
The framing you probably remember is one of triumph.
New Horizons launched in 2006, arriving at Pluto on July 14th, 2015, sending back images of a heart-shaped plane of nitrogen ice, layered blue haze, mountains of water ice on a world everyone had assumed was dead.
It was sold as a beginning, the opening chapter of a new field.

That was the promise.
And it was wrong.
Not because the science was wrong, because the word beginning implied there would be a next mission, a return, a deeper look.
There is not, there will not be.
What was sold as the start of Pluto exploration was in the honest reading the entirety of it.
One flyby, a few hours of close approach.
And now, 11 years later, a world that is quietly, measurably, and predictably beginning to disappear on us.
