For years, the James Webb Space Telescope has scanned the cosmos, hunting for a world that truly mirrors Earth. Now, astronomers are zeroing in on what may be the most promising candidate yet: a planet that could be our “best bet” for finding alien life . Named LHS 1140 b, this distant super-Earth has stunned researchers by showing strong evidence of a nitrogen-rich atmosphere and a potential liquid water ocean . The discovery is rewriting the rules of the search for a habitable planet.

The “Super-Earth” With a Bullseye Ocean

Located just 48 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetus, LHS 1140 b sits firmly within its star’s “Goldilocks zone”—the region where conditions are just right for liquid water to exist . But its true allure became clear after a detailed analysis combining data from the Webb telescope and several other observatories. Researchers have effectively ruled out the possibility that LHS 1140 b is a gaseous “mini-Neptune.” Instead, they found strong evidence that the planet is a rocky “super-Earth,” roughly six times more massive than our own world .

Perhaps the most exciting finding is that the atmosphere of LHS 1140 b may be rich in nitrogen, much like Earth’s . The planet is believed to be a frozen “snowball” world, but scientists theorize that on the side permanently facing its star, the warmth could create a “Bullseye Ocean” spanning roughly 2,400 miles—a tantalizing target for future observations .
